Swiss vote to reject animal lawyers

Obviously Peter Singer's expansion of the circle of morality is long ways to go.

"T
he Swiss have voted to reject a proposal that would have allowed animals to be represented in court by state-funded lawyers, the BBC reports

The
Swiss Animal Protection league gathered the 100,000 signatures needed to force the referendum, arguing that too many perpetrators of animal abuse go unpunished, the German news website Spiegel Online says.

But the proposal was decisively rejected yesterday, with 70.5 per cent of voters against it. Critics argued that animals enjoy sufficient protection under Swiss law already, and that the proposal would cost taxpayers dearly, according to
Sky News."

And in this country, we are ..well still in
nascent stages.
