One of my all time favorite book is Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt. I have to re-read it one of these days. Three different versions of what makes us happy:
- Happiness comes from getting what you want - Well, this is the litany of our society. Keeping up with the Jones-es, the most idiotic thing on earth.
- Happiness Comes from within - This is what ancient wisdom teaches us. But it has it's limitations. We all cannot be monks, right?
- Happiness comes from between - -Our connection with other people, satisfying work and pursuing something larger than us. This is the premise of Haidt's book. It's a wonderful book, beautifully explaining is how much love is essential to have a happy life.
