We tend to follow the herd (read "protectionist") but I after listening to this Econ-Talk, I changed my mind. Facts do get buried in cacophony.
A classic cognitive dissonance - "Members of congress voting for deficit spending in one breathe and in the very next breathe criticize the Chinese for running trade deficit with US of A."
